Guidance for walking activities
When joining a walking group with Wrexham u3a, you are expected to follow general safety and etiquette guidelines to ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone.
Key guidance for walkers includes being appropriately prepared and following the leader's instructions.
Before the Walk
The Group Leader should provide a brief description of the walk, including any potential hazards.
Health and medication: Inform the group leader privately of any relevant health conditions and carry necessary medication (e.g., inhaler, sugary snacks, GTN spray) with you.
ICE information: Carry In Case of Emergency (ICE) information, such as on a card or key fob.
What to Bring/Wear
Footwear: Wear sturdy flat shoes or walking boots.
Clothing: Check the weather forecast and wear appropriate clothing, including a waterproof coat even in summer. In winter, dress warmly with a hat, scarf, and gloves.
Supplies: Bring water, light snacks, and perhaps loose change for a hot drink afterwards (many walks end in a cafe).
During the Walk
Walk at your own risk: Walkers take part in walks at their own risk. Accident cover is not typically provided, and walk leaders are generally not responsible for accidents unless negligent.
Follow instructions: Always follow the guidance and instructions shared by the walk leader, whose primary concern is the group's safety.
Stay with the group: Do not go ahead of the leader or fall too far behind. A "tail walker" might be appointed to ensure no one is left behind.
Pace and breaks: The leader will set a pace that suits everyone and incorporate regular breaks to prevent fatigue.
Social etiquette: The walks are designed to be sociable and friendly; many people attend alone and make new friends.
